Meadowbank Railway Bridge
The Paramatta River Railway Bridge at Meadowbank has been converted for pedestrian/cycle use. The case iron bridge was built in 1886. The bridge links the Ryde district with Homebush Bay.

Box Vale Tramway Trail
Located in State Forest, the Box Vale track was a narrow gauge tramway created to service a coal mine in Box Vale Creek. The tramway and its bridges are long gone but the cuttings, embankments and an 84m-long tunnel tunnel remain.

Mount Victoria Tramways
Two mining tramway inclines in the area can be explored: Blair Athol Mine No.4, a Colliery Incline and the Chert Incline.

Wolgan Valley Heritage Trail
A spectacular walk or mountain bike ride following the route of a former standard gauge private railway, which served kerosene shale mines. The railway branched off the main western line at Newnes Junction, near Lithgow, ascended to an altitude of 1200m before dropping down to Newnes (altitude 530m) in the rugged Wolgan River Valley, all in 50km. The railway passed through two tunnels, the second of which (closest to Newnes) now has a large population of glow worms. The trail is mainly a vehicle track except for around the glow worm tunnel where it is walking only.

Fernleigh Track
The Newcastle City and Lake Macquarie councils bought the land of this former private coal railway and converted the first section Adamstown - Kahibah (Burwood Rd) into a rail trail several years ago. This section includes the significant tunnel under the Pacific Highway.

Darwin Rail Trail
The trail follows the route of the former North Australian Railway. It is part of Darwin's extensive network of cycle paths. Older parts of the trail are now well shaded by trees after an extensive tree planting program.

Ferny Grove Rail Trail
The surburban railway to Ferny Grove once extended a further 32km to Dayboro. Two short sections of this railway are now rail trails. Although short, they are popular with Brisbane mountain bikers due to their proximity to the many trails in the Brisbane Forest Park and the Samford Valley.

Dularcha National Park Rail Trail
This short rail trail actually follows the main Brisbane-Cairns railway line between Landsborough and Mooloolah in what is sort of a “railway” national park, the Dularcha National Park. This route is well suited to use of the train to travel from one end to the other before undertaking the walk back to the station of your choice.

Caboolture - Wamuran Rail Trail
This trail winds through state forest near the Glasshouse Mountains. It is an attractive walk or ride and is included in Bicycle Queensland's book Good Rides in South East Queensland. The trail starts at Mylett Road. This road is a dead end, and the trail starts at the gate at the end of the road. It finishes at a gate on Raaen Road. This gate is marked with a TRAIL sign .These TRAIL signs actually mark the "Wamuran Loop Trail" (28km) which runs through the forest and, also starting at Raaen Road. The Loop Trail also takes in a short section of former railway beside the highway just west of Wamuran.

Hervey Bay - Links Mobility Corridor
This trail connects the main centres of the coastal city of Hervey Bay. It runs from the city heart at Pialba to Urangan, the corridor is being developd to link key buildings and city districts.
The trail is managed by the Hervey Bay City Council, who are considering extending the trail all the way to the Urangan Pier in the near future, which will link it up with the foreshore shared path along the Bay water front.

Watawa Recreation Trail
Walk, cycle or horse ride on the former rail corridor which once carried passenger and goods rail traffic from Mt Perry to Bundaberg. The Trail provides scenic views over cane fields and rolling hills.

Boolboonda Tunnel
Walk or drive through this 192m tunnel, the longest unsupported tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere!

Muntapa Tunnel
Walk through Queensland’s longest straight railway tunnel (287m). It is also quite high being 640m above sea level. Now that trains don't roar through it the tunnel is a seasonal home to a colony of bent winged bats.

Mt Garnet to Lappa Junction
This trail goes through magnificent ranges with sweeping views of the isolated countryside. Ancient frangipani and mango tress mark the site of old stations and homesteads. Heritage items include narrow rock cuttings and old stone bridges.
The trail passes through remote areas. There are no services along the trail. Carry plenty of water, food and fuel.

Atherton Tablelands Rail Trail
High up on the Atherton Tablelands this rail trail would run besides the railway from Atherton to Tolga, then on the former railway through Kairi to Yungaburra.
One of the trail's major attractions would be the Barron River and Peterson Creek bridges.

Westside Bike Path
Following the route of the Holdfast Bay Railway, this mostly tree-lined on- and off-road trail winds through the inner Adelaide suburbs before emerging at the beach in Glenelg. There are many busy street crossings, only some with lights, so take care. The trail is popular with walkers and cyclists, many of whom use it as a commuter trail to the city, and also with skate boarders. Sections of the trail are provided with overhead lighting.

Coast to Vines Rail Trail
The Coast to Vines rail trail is a great day or weekend destination on the Fleurieu Peninsula. From the magnificent cliffs of Hallett Cove to the natural beauty of the Onkaparinga River Recreation Park, the trail offers scenic coast to hinterland views. Take in spectacular vineyard vistas and changing landscapes as you make your way through the renowned McLaren Vale wine district. With historic towns such as Old Reynella and Willunga there are plenty of good places to stay and eat.

Clare Valley Riesling Trail
This trail passes through a landscape of rolling hillsides, vineyards, wildflowers in spring and wild olive trees. Allow plenty of time to leave the trail and explore the Clare valley wineries. The trail is easily cycled one way in about two hours. From the former Clare rail yards it runs south through wine growing regions to Auburn. The trail leaves the railway formation for a short distance at Auburn, following the main road to the old railway station, now the home of Mount Horrocks Wines.

Rattler Rail Trail
The Rattler passes a picturesque parade of rolling farmlands, vineyards and a dairy on the way to Auburn. Stop for a coffee, a riesling or a rest at either end and take in the local delights of wine, olives and art galleries.

Tasmania

Don to Devonport Cycleway
See some of the nicest parts of Devonport by walking or cycling the rail trail. Parts of the trail run parallel with the railway to Burnie and the Don River tourist railway. Part also follows the route of a former tramway. You can follow the trail from the Don Railway Station to central Devonport, with the option of a loop trail along the opposite bank of the Don River.

Rocherlea Rail Trail
The Rocherlea Rail Trail is in the early stages of planning and development but a short section can be walked or cycled on a mountain bike. The trail will eventually link to an existing walking and cycling path along the Tamar River, in the port area near the centre of Launceston. It will form a good commuter link for people from the suburbs of Rocherlea and Mowbray.

Railton to Sheffield Rail Trail
The Railton to Sheffield Rail Trail is part of the long distance ‘Tasmanian Trail’ which runs the full length of the state from north to south – 480km from Devonport to Dover. Establishing a trail over this distance requires many private properties to be crossed, so be sure to leave gates as you find them.

Liffey Falls Rail Trail
The Liffey Falls trail takes you past one of the state’s most attractive cascading waterfalls. The trail can be walked from either the upper car park, where there are picnic tables, toilets and water, or the lower car park, which is essentially just a trailhead. The lower end of the trail is narrower but well formed and follows the route of an old tramway used for timber hauling in the early 1900s.

Montezuma Falls Rail Trail
This trail features the 105m high Montezuma Falls. Traversing lush rainforest with leatherwood, myrtle and sassafras, the trail follows the route of the former North East Dundas Tramway which ran from Zeehan to Williamsford. Williamsford was once a busy mining town but is now slowly being reclaimed by the bush.

Melba Flats to Zeehan Rail Trail
Two different railways ran parallel between Zeehan and Melba Flats. One was the 2 foot gauge government-owned North East Dundas Tramway which continued to Williamsford; the other was the 3ft 6in gauge railway to Burnie on the north coast, operated by the Emu Bay Railway Company. Today, the easements of these lines form an excellent walking and mountain bike trail which passes through open grasslands. Wildflowers are abundant in summer.

Spray Tunnel and Comstock Tramways
This trail follows four connected disused mining tramways, one with a tunnel. A loop trail has been created from Zeehan through the Spray Tunnel for cars, walkers and cyclists. After passing through the tunnel you can continue to Comstock by 4WD or bicycle, or on foot.

Zeehan to Strahan Road
The main road between Zeehan and Strahan follows the route of a former railway for most of its length. The level gradients of the road are typical of a railway. 15km south of Zeehan, an unsignposted 4WD track leads west, close to the Badger River. This track follows the former railway easement for 5km while the road here takes to higher ground. Take care: after 5km the track stops abruptly at the top of a steep ravine, where there was once a railway bridge. On the other side, the railway continued a further 1km before rejoining the alignment of the road.

Magnet Mine Rail Trail
Surface: Dirt A delightful trail, running through lush rainforest to the site of the Magnet Mine. The mine site has good places to camp and relics to explore. The trail begins 1.75km west of Waratah at the local tip. The trail follows the route of the former Magnet Tramway, built in 1901 to carry silver-lead ore from the Magnet Mine.

Wee Georgie Wood and the Tullah Tramway Trail
Until the construction of the Murchison Highway in 1962, there were no roads to Tullah. The town’s only connection with the outside world was the Tullah Tramway. Lake Rosebery now covers much of the old tramway formation but a short section can be walked on the northern side of the lake starting at the Lake Rosebery Water Ski Club on Pieman Road.

North Mount Lyell Rail Trail
This great trail follows a historic former railway route through lovely rainforest inside te World Heritage Area. Kelly Basin and Pillinger are historic town sites on the shores of Macquarie Harbour. A 5km section from the Bird River turnoff to Bird River is suitable for 4WD and bicycles. From Bird River the trail is for walking only. Allow a full day for the walk to Pillinger.

Hobart to Glenorchy Cycleway
This concrete-surfaced trail runs from the Hobart Regatta Grounds on Queens Domain, past the Botanic Gardens, Runnymede Historic House and residential areas, linking the northern suburbs with the city centre. There are urban landscape views, colourful murals and the Tasmanian Transport Museum en route. The trail runs beside an active railway, connecting the Port of Hobart with the north. There are very few road intersections and it’s popular with recreational users and commuters.

Nieka Pipeline Track
Neika Pipeline Track follows the route of a tramway. This tramway was used in the construction of the pipeline and later for timber haulage.

Wielangta Tramway Trail
The trail follows the route of a former logging tram line so there are no steep hills. There are patches of rainforest and it’s generally a lush environment even in mid-summer. Wielangta is a local Aboriginal name meaning ‘tall trees’.

Sandridge Railway Trail
A shared path starts following the light railway to Port Melbourne. For much of the route, this path runs through pleasant parkland. The path finishes at the old Port Melbourne Station. From here you can walk on to historic Station Pier.

Webb Dock Bridge
The former Webb Dock Railway Bridge has been converted for use by pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge runs parallel with the Charles Grimes road bridge and provides a connection over the Yarra between Docklands and South Bank. Something to combine with all the other paths and attractions in the area. The line was only open from 1986 to 1996 and some of the line remains in place up at the Loimer St end. The bridge shape was changed considerably of course to fit in with the area, especially the aboriginal "fishing net" shape on the Yarras Edge side, when it was opened in 2003.

Outer Circle Rail Trail
A well developed trail with good history boards, which winds through a variety of suburbs and urban parkland. From Fairfield to East Malvern it is known as the Anniversary Trail.

This is a trail beside the suburban railway line from Upper Ferntree Gully to Belgrave in the Dandenong Ranges. It follows the historic route of Puffing Billy, which ran from Upper Ferntree Gully until the extension of the suburban electric system to Belgrave in 1962. Some short road sections.

Red Hill Rail Trail
Wineries, galleries, peaceful rural and sea views and fine beaches combine to make this a great trail for a day trip or weekend visit. The bottom section from Merricks is popular with horse riders and partly does not follow the original alignment so is steeper than a typical rail trail. The trail is managed by the Mornington Penisula shire.

Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail
Running through the Colquhoun State Forest, the trail links the East Gippsland Rail Trail with Lakes Entrance. 7.5km of the trail follows the route of the Mississippi Creek Tramway used to transport stone from a local quary for construction of the Enterance.

Grand Ridge Rail Trail
A very pleasant forest trail in the heart of Gippsland. It passes several flora reserves and crosses large embankments as it climbs up to Mirboo North where there is a boutique brewery, a good bakery and colourful historical murals depicting the town’s past, including one of the last train.

Bass Coast Rail Trail
This trail is best known for the trestle bridge at Kilcunda, which has a surf beach as its backdrop. This is the only coastal rail trail in Victoria, and makes an easy day trip from Melbourne or can be part of a weekend away. The landscape varies from the rugged coastline at Kilcunda, to flat farmland and coastal bushland. There are old mining areas of historical significance at Wonthaggi and Kilcunda.

The trail passes through rainforest, fern gullies, messmate and stringybark forest, and there are plenty of birds, mammals and seasonal wildflowers. There may occasionally be fallen trees across the trail and watch out for snakes in summer.

Moondarra Rail Trail
A 7km section of the former Walhalla Railway is publically accessible in the Moondarra State Park. The trail crosses the Moondarra Resevoir Road soon after the turnoff from the main road. The trail is not formally maintained - there are no signposts and some sections are partly overgrown. Parts of the trail are used by 4WDs and trail bikes. The trail is marked on the Parks Victoria map of the park.

Gippsland Plains Rail Trail
The 19 km section from the Glengarry Historic Railway Station to Cowwarr has not been fully developed but has had the rocky ballast removed in the rough section between Glengarry and Toongabbie. This section has two creek crossings that can be walked through. The trail reserve has significant remnant stands of native trees, shrubs and grasses. The Dawson Station flora and fauna reserve, between Cowwarr and Heyfield, has rare native grasses.

The Old Beechy Rail Trail follows much of the original path of the narrow gauge railway “The Beechy” which ran from 1902 until 1962. Great Divide Rail Trail
This trail follows a short section of the former Ballarat – Daylesford railway which is now also part of the Great Dividing Trail (GDT), a marked route from Ballarat to Daylesford and beyond. There is lots of good cycling and walking in this area using forest tracks, the GDT and former timber tramways.

Andersons Mill Tramway
This is one of a number of timber tramway trails in the Wombat State Forest that date from 1866 to the 1920s. The tramway was laid with wooden rails. To reach the start of the trail, follow the Calder Highway to Gisborne, turn east on Bacchus Marsh Road and follow this for approximatly 10km to Carroll Road. Turn right; after 2km diverge left onto Firth Road, which leads to Firth Park after approximalty 9km.

The trail goes through significant remnant native grasslands at the Ballarat and Skipton ends of the trail, and 17 notable bird species have been recorded. There are also historical gold mining sites. An impressive trestle bridge near Newtown is open for trail users.

Railway Reserves Heritage Trail
This trail passes through the hills in Perth's outer suburban area. Part of the trail runs through John Forrest National Park, passing Hovea Falls and featuring the only former railway tunnel in the state. The area also features wineries and tea-rooms.

Farming Heritage Trail
The Farming Heritage Trail runs through open agricultural scenery as it traces a the route of the Eastern Railway opened in 1885 and closed in 1966. This trail is an extension of the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail from Midland.

Mundaring Weir Rail Trail
Along the way you will see the "Golden Pipeline" - the longest fresh water pipleline in the world running 560km from Mundaring Weir to Kalgoorlie. Built between 1898 and 1903, it is still in use. The pipeline was designed by CY O'Connor, the Government Engineer-in-Chief. Sadly O'Connor took his own life only a few weeks before the pipeline started operation. More information on O'Connor can be found at No. 1 Pump Station at the end of the trail.

Kalamunda Zig Zag Trail
Situated in the Gooseberry Hill National Park, the zig zag offers great views over Perth. It is a popular scenic drive. You may also like to walk the zig zag. Traffic is generally slow moving, but some care is required since there are no footpaths. The national park offers a number of walking tracks that offer interesting side trips off the road.

Kalamunda Railway Heritage Trail
This trail follows the route of the railway which ran through Kalamunda to Karragullen. A feature of this line is a zig zag which allowed trains to climb the steep grades of the Darling Range. The zig zag itself is now a scenic drive (see Kallamunda Zig Zag trail description). This trail starts near the top of the zig zag and runs to Pickering Brook.

Jarrahdale Balmoral Trail
The trail passes through bushland and some farmland. Along the way the trail passes a log loading ramp and several "shield trees". These shield trees have a numbers carved into them and were used by foresters in the 1920s as a grid reference system. The trail finishes at the POW Camp. Signage describes its operation and explains the ruins that remain.

Munda Biddi Trail
Parallelling the famous Bibbulmum walking track, this massive mountain bike (and walking) trail will eventually reach from Mundaring near Perth to Albany. About one third of the distance will be on old railway formations making it among the longest rail trails in the world. The first 32km section from Mundaring to Collie was finished in July 2004.

Collie-Darkan Rail Trail
Features open cut mine at Buckingham and spectacular wildflowers in spring. Summer time (due to heat) is probably the least favourable time to use the trail, late autumn to early summer is ideal. August to October is the best time to catch the vast array of wildflowers although some can be found all year. The trail surface was graded and rolled twice during construction and contains sufficient clay to maintain a relatively firm surface all year. It is suitable for hybrid type bikes.

The trail passes through natural bushland and between farmland to provide the users of the trail with a diverse landscape to enjoy. With the developing viticultural industry within the area, the trail borders vineyards as well. There are numerous bridges in the 5 kilometres north of Margaret River crossing a major river and creeks and streams of varying sizes.

Ten Mile Brook Trail
The trail starts near "Old Kate", a preserved steam engine at the northern edge of Margaret River. Much of the trails follows old timber tramway formations up the river to the Rusden picnic site. The picnic site has all toilet and barbeque facilities. Optional winter paths are provided when the trail gets very wet underfoot.

Old Timberline Trail
The Old Timberline Rail Trail begins in the Nannup Foreshore Park. It follows the route of a tramway built in 1908 by the Karui Timber company. Nannup, a heritage town of 1200, has been greatly influenced by railways and its relationship with the valuable jarrah and karri timber industry.

The trail follows the shore of Wilson Inlet between Denmark River and Crusoe Beach Road before swinging inland to finish at the South Coast Highway. The trail passes through a range of coastal vegetation and offers beautiful views over the inlet. There is access to a couple of beaches along the way.

Denmark to Nornalup Heritage Rail Trail
This coastal trail features a variety of forest, farmland and coast heathland views. It is currently in two sections:
(1)The 33km Denmark River Mouth to Parkers Rd. The section between Ocean Beach Rd and Wentworth Rd contains several very boggy and sandy sections so at this stage can only be recommended for the very keen.
(2)The 14km Bow Bridge to Nornalup section opened in May 2006 and the surface is still rough and/or sandy in places. Again only for the keen bike rider or walker. The last 4km into Nornalup follows Station Road and finishes 2km out of the centre of Nornalup.

Hopetoun - Ravensthorpe Railway Heritage Walk
The trail is open in four sections:
Raventhorpe - Desmond (16km) Some of this section of the former line has been sold off so there is a deviation of a few kilometres on road.

Hopetoun Trailhead loop (14km) of which about 5km is on the former railway.

Carnarvon tramway
The One Mile Jetty was built in 1897 to serve the State Ships which carried passengers and freight between Carnarvon and Perth. Before the construction of the North West Coastal Highway, shipping provided the only link between Carnarvon and the outside world.
